На протяжении всего фильма Капра иронично высмеивает женский карьеризм. Но прежде всего он нападает на жадный и скаредный капитализм (ломтики мяса, тонкие, как папиросная бумага, – символ успеха ресторанов «АБЧ»), который режиссер мечтает заменить на другую разновидность капитализма, щедрую в своем изобилии (предприятие молодоженов кладет в свои обеды навынос куда более жирные куски). Конечно, по своему посылу фильм менее оптимистичен и более тревожен, чем того желал бы Капра (2-й вид капитализма, несомненно, станет со временем таким же безжалостным, как 1-й).
